The Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) is the state of Florida’s social services agency. Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.

Northeast Florida State Hospital (NEFSH) is a 613-bed, licensed mental health treatment facility that provides person-centered services to adults suffering from severe and persistent mental illness. The hospital, located in Macclenny, was established in 1959 and is the largest state operated civil treatment facility.

This is a highly responsible and professional position serving as the Behavioral Specialist within the Psychology Unit. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team player who works seamlessly across all sections within the program office. This role requires the use of independent judgment, a proactive approach to responsibilities, and exceptional attention to detail. Specific Duties and Responsibilities include

  • This is work providing mental health assessment and treatment services to an inpatient adult population at Northeast Florida State Hospital as a master’s level clinician. 
  • Mental health assessments involve independent completion of routine hospital forms.
  • Routine violence risk and suicide risk assessments are completed under the direct supervision of a licensed psychologist. 
  • Treatment services include individual and group counseling.
  • Conducts clinical interviews, chart reviews, behavioral observations, staff consultation, and related documentation for initial and annual psychological evaluations, routine suicide risk assessments, and routine violence risk assessments.
  • Attends Recovery Team meetings on assigned living areas, participates in the formulation of treatment plans, and completes related documentation.
  • Provides individual mental health treatment to assigned residents to include mental health counseling and behavior plans.
  • Facilitates assigned Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity treatment group, provides group coverage for additional groups, and completes related documentation.
  • Attends hospital meetings and trainings.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Director of Psychology.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required for the position

  • Knowledge of the theories and principles of clinical, counseling or behavioral psychology.
  • Knowledge of psychological testing principles and practices.
  • Ability to administer and interpret psychological tests.
  • Ability to prepare psychological reports.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret psychological data.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in counseling or psychology; or
  • Licensed as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Marriage & Family Therapist, or Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
