About the position Cornell University Library is seeking applications for a Rare Materials Cataloging Librarian . In CUL’s collaborative and supportive culture, the Rare Materials Cataloging Librarian works on bibliographic description for materials reflecting all of the collecting areas of the Rare and Manuscript Collections (RMC), including Africana, hip hop, history of science, human sexuality, witchcraft and much more. The Rare Materials Cataloger brings focus and care to our MARC bibliographic and authority data for rare materials, while ensuring inclusive practices are guiding factors in our metadata practices. The Rare Materials Cataloging Librarian, an employee of Library Technical Services (LTS), is embedded within the Rare and Manuscript Collections. As such, they work in a collaborative environment and will benefit from both focused training as well as professional development provided to the cohort of catalogers at Cornell University Library. The Rare Materials Cataloging Librarian has the support to actively participate in local, national and international discussions relating to the access, retrieval, description, and management of library resources; further, the Rare Materials Cataloging Librarian applies these discussions to CUL's research and development efforts. Librarians at Cornell University hold academic appointments as Research, Teaching, and Extension faculty. The incumbent must meet Cornell University Library requirements for Research, Teaching, and Extension (RTE) faculty promotion and reappointment through engagement in service and scholarship activities.

Requirements

  • A master’s degree in library and information sciences (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program or an advanced degree with relevant professional experience in an academic or legal setting.
  • Experience cataloging rare materials according to PCC, DCRM and other community guidelines
  • Demonstrated knowledge of metadata principles, standards, schemas and tools
  • Demonstrated aptitude for creating and working with authority data (e.g. Library of Congress Authorities, Getty vocabularies, ORCID, ISNI, etc.)
  • Excellent communication, project management and analytic skills, including the ability to work well in a team-based environment
  • Reading knowledge of at least one language in addition to English.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to fostering learning, research, service and/or outreach in a diverse community.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to interpret and transcribe written text in multiple scripts.
  • Skill in deciphering printed letterforms in various languages.
  • Working knowledge of written Latin.
