Title: Public Health Consultant – LEGD $64,937.60 - $93,516.80 / Posted Thru: 5/4/26 Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live and Work in Michigan Purpose: The position is the recognized resource for the coordination and implementation of multiple programs in the Public Health Genomics Section, Lifecourse Epidemiology and Genomics Division (LEGD) at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). This role provides support to 1) MI HEARTSafe Schools Program, to coordinate and assist with activities involving the Michigan Alliance for Prevention of Sudden Cardiac Death of the Young (MAP-SCDY); and 2) Michigan Rare Disease Advisory Council (RDAC), to implement and coordinate the department’s RDAC. Duties and Responsibilities: Coordinate the MI HEARTSafe School Program:

  • Serve as program lead, collaborating with other staff to ensure implementation of core program activities.
  • Facilitate the annual awards ceremony.
  • Respond to program inquiries, annually review updates to criteria/application, update online information and track awardees.
  • Serve as liaison with external programs (Michigan Department of Education, Michigan High School Athletic Association, Project ADAM).
  • Collaborate with EMS for Children and acquire data to support program needs as appropriate, conduct analyses, and develop reports.
  • Coordinate the MI HEARTSafe Schools annual workshop and all related activities.
  • Coordinate the Michigan Alliance for Sudden Cardiac Death of the Young Alliance; includes scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, drafting minutes, and corresponding with the alliance as needed, keeping the alliance abreast of the MI HEARTSafe School Program, organizing, participating in, and presenting at meetings/conferences.

Implement and coordinate Michigan’s Rare Disease Advisory Council:

  • Identify and solicit council representation from a cross-sector and geographically diverse group of advocates.
  • Conduct meetings to identify and research needs of the rare disease community in Michigan, prioritizing issues related to diagnosis, treatment, research, access to care, costs, and equity.
  • Determine best practices from other state RDACs and national organizations to support the rare disease community.
  • Explore opportunities for collaboration with the Rare Disease Center of Excellence at Michigan Medicine, Michigan Rare Action Network, and stakeholders within the State of MPHI is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer Page 3 of 4 10/2023 Michigan in carrying out the activities of the Council.
  • Draft and submit an annual report to the Michigan legislature regarding the activities, findings, and recommendations of the Council.
  • Remain abreast of scientific progress related to the diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases as well as the policies and legislation that impact the rare disease community; participate in relevant webinars, meetings, and conferences as requested.
  • If deemed of interest to the Council, design and distribute surveys to better understand challenges of the rare disease community as appropriate; Consult with experts to improve access to and quality of care.

Other duties:

  • Review the governor’s proclamations upon request.
  • Provide general assistance for specific project activities.
  • Attend relevant meetings/events, section, division and departmental staff meetings.
  • Perform other tasks as requested to ensure successful completion of program objectives.
  • Maintain a positive, strong, credible, professional and interpersonal relationship with all parties relevant to MPHI projects and represent the best interest of MPHI at all times.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements: Education: Possession of a master's degree in public health, health communication, health services administration, community development, population and health sciences, international studies, political science, health policy or a public health related field such as nursing, epidemiology, health education, or genetics; a master's degree in social work; master's degree in counseling; or a master’s degree in public or business administration with a health care concentration.
